B&R Automation's VS Smart Sensors series includes the VSC122Q22.032P-000, a smart camera built for machine vision tasks in industrial automation lines. As a Smart Camera, it combines imaging optics, lighting, and onboard processing so inspection, measurement, and guidance tasks can be handled at line speed without an external PC. The device uses an S-mount lens interface and is supplied as a standard variant. This makes it a compact, self-contained vision node that can communicate directly with a controller. It is intended for applications where inspection decisions must be made directly at the machine.

The optical system uses a 6 mm focal length lens with an F3.5 aperture on a 1/1.8-inch sensor, giving a 37-degree field of view for short working distances. The optical block is protected by glass with a polarizing filter, and the LED lens is the type 2 standard element. RGB-Lime illumination is provided by 16 LEDs arranged in four segments for even exposure, and the unit cannot be combined with UV emitters or a type 1 lens. At a native resolution of 1.3 MP, the sensor streams images at up to 165 fps for high-speed pick-and-place or web inspection. Captured frames move through on-sensor preprocessing pipelines clocked at 800 MHz, supported by a 1 MB level-2 cache that helps reduce latency before results are sent over the network.

Image analysis is handled by a Cortex A9 i.MX6 processor. Its 4 cores share 2 GB of DDR3 RAM, allowing several vision functions to run at the same time without resource contention. This allows the device to handle both image capture and analysis locally instead of relying on a separate computer for routine inspection tasks. The camera also supports line-scan operation, so it can be used on conveyors that require continuous imaging. Pattern matching, code reading, and presence detection can run with predictable response times inside the same housing.
