The VSC122A24.043P-000 smart camera is built by B & R Automation for the VS Smart Sensors series. It integrates a lens, illuminator, and multicore processor in one sealed housing so that machine builders can add visual inspection, code reading, and position feedback without a separate PC. Mounted directly on a machine frame, the unit captures images, evaluates them internally, and forwards pass/fail or measurement results to the automation controller over the network.

At the heart of the device, a Cortex A9 processor runs at 800 MHz, and its quad architecture provides 4 cores for parallel execution of several vision functions. A dedicated L2 cache of 1 MB reduces external memory accesses, while on-board DDR3 supplies 2 GB of RAM for temporary image buffers and lookup tables. The sensor delivers native images at 3.5 MP, permitting precise edge localization for gauging and feature matching on small parts. These resources enable the camera to carry out preprocessing, segmentation, and rule-based evaluation within the sensor head, eliminating latency associated with remote computing.

The optical and lighting subsystem complements that processing capability. A rolling-shutter imager streams up to 43 fps, giving motion-tolerant acquisition on fast conveyors. The factory-installed lens provides an 8 mm focal length that pairs with the 37° field of view to balance coverage and pixel density. Illumination is supplied by a ring of 16 LEDs behind a glass diffuser; the emitters are tuned to a peak wavelength of 385 nm so ultraviolet light enhances contrast on fluorescent inks, adhesives, or security markings. Because the LED segments can be switched independently, the camera can sequence directional lighting or strobe only during exposure to minimize heat and extend component life.
