B&R Automation's VS Smart Sensors series includes the VSC122001.051P-000, a smart camera built for integrated machine vision duties on automated lines. By combining image capture, processing, and decision logic in one housing, the device removes the need for a separate industrial PC. The unit performs inspection tasks directly at the machine instead of sending raw image data to another processor. That arrangement helps keep response times short when parts must be sorted, verified, or rejected in motion.

The camera is driven by a Cortex A9 i.MX6 quad-core processor running at 800 MHz. With 4 cores, it can execute multiple vision algorithms in parallel, so geometry checks, code reading, and presence verification can occur within a single exposure. An on-chip 1 MB L2 cache reduces memory latency, and 2 GB of DDR3 RAM stores several image buffers for uninterrupted streaming. Local buffering also helps maintain stable image flow when successive inspections occur close together. Captured frames can be processed at up to 90 fps, and the camera can run several vision functions simultaneously for high-speed inspection tasks.

The optical chain uses a 12 mm focal length lens assembly. It attaches through an S-mount, which keeps the package compact and allows quick lens changes for different fields of view. A glass with anti-reflective coating window protects the sensor while improving light transmission under variable plant lighting. Native resolution is 1.3 MP, which provides enough pixels for traceability marks and dimensional inspection on small parts. The camera does not include integrated LED lighting or an LED lens, so external illumination must be provided when contrast is limited. The model is not suitable for line-sensor applications, so it is intended for area capture rather than continuous web monitoring.
