The 2IF100.60-1 communication module is produced by B&R Automation as part of the System 2010 Controllers series. Installed in a controller rack, the module expands the CPU with serial and fieldbus connectivity so PLCs can exchange process data with drives, operator panels, and decentralized I/O devices. By handling protocol conversion onboard, the 2IF100.60-1 frees the main processor for logic execution and offers flexible wiring options for a wide range of industrial automation equipment.
For cabinet layout, the module measures 285 × 40 × 185 mm and draws only 7 W at full load, so heat dissipation requirements remain low. Interface 1 follows the RS232 standard and is suitable for point-to-point links up to 15 m. Interface 2 can switch between RS232 and TTY, allowing either voltage or current-loop signaling for legacy devices. High-speed communication is provided by Interface 3, which supports 347 kbaud over distances of up to 1200 m on twisted-pair wiring using the RS485 or RS422 physical layer; this differential signaling resists noise across long plant runs. These interfaces allow the controller to connect to programming stations, barcode scanners, and multidrop sensor networks without additional converters.
Interface 4 implements a CAN fieldbus managed by the Intel 82527 controller, and its maximum bus length of 1000 m supports distributed actuators that require short telegrams and deterministic arbitration. The card has four independent channels that can operate simultaneously, allowing motion, safety, and diagnostic traffic to use dedicated buses while maintaining a uniform programming model. Each port is located on the front edge, so wiring changes can be completed without dismantling the rack. The supported electrical ranges also reduce the need for external repeaters in long or varied network layouts.
