The 2EX301.5 is an expansion I/O module built by B&R Automation for the System 2010 Controllers series. The device provides an expansion master interface that lets a base controller communicate with additional backplane sections. In industrial automation systems, it bridges the control CPU to remote I/O cards and maintains deterministic data exchange across multiple racks. This layout helps distribute I/O hardware across a larger machine without moving control processing away from the main rack.
The front panel uses a 7-segment display to show the logical rack address; the units digit is hard-wired, and the tens digit is adjusted with a rotary selector. Communication to the downstream bus is handled by the interface designated 1 (Expansion Master). The enclosure measures 285 × 40 × 185 mm, which allows alignment with standard 19-inch rails. Internal drivers consume a maximum of 3 W, which helps keep the controller stack within passive cooling limits. The module must occupy the leftmost slot of the base rack, and once active it can supervise up to 99 subordinate I/O cards on the attached segment. This arrangement lets the controller keep rack addressing and expansion communication organized during operation.
Segment extension limits determine how far the bus can be carried outside the main enclosure. With a dedicated expansion cable, available in 1 m / 2 m lengths, the module links the origin rack to the next section without timing errors. The platform allows up to 10 bus segments per expansion chain, and each segment can accept up to twenty directly chained modules before another repeater is required. Reliable operation also depends on the BP202 backplane, which routes the 24 V field supply and differential clock lines across every slot. A status LED marked TRANSFER toggles when telegrams are forwarded, showing that traffic is present across the expanded system.
