The 2EX200.50-1 is a communication controller manufactured by B&R Automation as part of the System 2010 Controllers series. Installed beside the central CPU, it handles the fieldbus link that connects distributed sensors and drives to the automation backbone. By translating internal backplane data into a deterministic serial stream, the module permits synchronized command and feedback cycles. This communication process helps machine sequences, safety interlocks, and diagnostic messages remain time-coherent across the production cell.
The module provides two independent serial channels through two RS-485 interfaces, and each channel supports automatic baud-rate recognition so the node can synchronize with an existing network without manual adjustment. Supported data rates include 100 kbit/s over 1,200 m of cable and extend up to 1 Mbit/s over 200 m, allowing the system to balance transmission speed against segment length. Bus arbitration follows the master-slave principle, ensuring that only one participant transmits at a time and that latency remains predictable. The electronics have a maximum power draw of 12 W and can be powered directly from the controller’s 24 V rail without placing a significant additional thermal load on the cabinet. Termination resistance is provided by an external plug-in resistor, allowing the line impedance to be matched to the installed cable.
The unit can store up to 99 dynamic node numbers, which are assigned through the controller software for flexible address management on the physical bus. Signals enter and leave through two 9-pin D-type sockets arranged inline, allowing a direct feed-through connection to form the required physical bus topology. The bus trunk requires a shielded, twisted-pair cable to maintain signal integrity at higher transfer rates and reduce susceptibility to electrical interference. The housing measures 285 × 40 × 185 mm, providing the dimensions needed to plan its position beside other controller modules. A front-mounted diagnostic LED provides immediate operating status without requiring access to internal wiring, while the direct bus connection avoids the need for additional patch cables.
