B & R Automation manufactures the 2DI425.6 digital input module for use with the System 2010 Controllers series. The unit accepts discrete field signals and forwards their state to the main CPU in real time. By translating external switching levels into clean logic values, the module serves as the interface between machine devices and higher-level program logic inside an industrial cabinet.
The module is designed for control cabinets that run on a field potential of 24 VDC, and all 32 input points are registered individually by the controller. An internal pull-up network produces an input resistance of 4 kΩ per channel, limiting sensor current and reducing heat. The electronics, terminal strip, and backplane contacts fit into a package measuring 285 x 40 x 185 mm, giving high channel density without expanding the rack footprint. During operation, status LEDs and processing circuitry draw a maximum of 6 W, so power budgeting is straightforward. Inputs are arranged in 8 groups of 4, allowing separate power feeds or diagnostics for each cluster and helping reduce downtime.
Signal integrity is maintained by optically isolated barriers that separate each group from the processor, while there is no isolation between channels inside a group. The interface registers a logical high when the terminal voltage exceeds more than 15 V and a logical low when it drops below less than 5 V, while intermediate levels are ignored. Propagation through the optocoupler adds a worst-case delay of 12 ms, with a typical response of 10 ms, which is fast enough for contact monitoring, limit sensing, or valve feedback that does not require sub-millisecond sampling. Wiring may be configured for sink or source polarity, and the circuitry withstands up to 30 VDC on any input, giving margin against transient spikes or miswired feeds.
