The 7NC161.7 is an encoder counter module released by B&R Automation within the System 2003 Controllers series. It installs beside CPU and I/O slices and provides a dedicated hardware counter that interprets both incremental and SSI absolute encoder signals. By converting high-speed edge transitions or serial data into deterministic position values, the module supports coordinated motion, trigger, and length-measurement tasks on packaging lines, printing presses, and assembly stations where rapid feedback is essential. This helps the controller keep machine motion synchronized with the control cycle during registration, cut-to-length, and position-tracking tasks.

Its counting core handles up to 400 kHz of edge transitions and stores the result in a 32-bit register, so very large position counts can be tracked before rollover. For quadrature encoders, the device performs 4-fold evaluation, multiplying the basic resolution by four without extra wiring. The differential receiver accepts a 5 V differential level, which helps suppress common-mode noise on long cable runs.
