B & R Automation manufactures the 7IF321 for the System 2003 Controllers series. The module is a screw-in communication card that provides one serial channel so a base CPU can link with decentralized I/O, drives, and human-machine interfaces inside automated equipment. By inserting this board into the controller backplane, the system gains differential serial capability without using external rack space or a separate power source. It converts logic-level signals from the processor into balanced lines used on factory networks, enabling reliable data transfer over longer distances. This arrangement keeps the serial interface inside the controller assembly and avoids the need for an external signal converter.
The communication side is presented on a 9-pin DSUB socket, and the electronics comply with the RS485/RS422 standard, supporting half- or full-duplex cabling. Frame format can be set to 7 / 8 data bits with 1 or 2 stop bits to match legacy field devices. The port transmits at rates up to 115.2 kBaud and remains stable across long twisted-pair runs. Without a repeater, the differential signaling sustains communication over 1200 m of cable, which reduces the need for intermediate hardware on large machines. Galvanic separation is maintained by the internal PLC-to-IF1 isolation circuit, and the module supports multi-station network topologies.

When mounted horizontally, the unit operates between 0°C to +60°C; in vertical orientations, the safe operating range is 0°C to +50°C. A screw-in module frame secures the card against vibration during production cycles, and the housing tolerates storage temperatures from −25 °C to +70 °C without degradation. The enclosed installation also helps protect the connector and electronics from accidental contact during normal operation.
