The 7EX484 controller is built by B&R Automation for the System 2003 Controllers series and serves as the communication and power distribution core in modular machine lines. Positioned between higher-level PLCs and field devices, it consolidates network traffic, conditions incoming power, and provides backplane resources so that analog, digital, and motion modules can be addressed through a common control layer. This arrangement centralizes communication and module power within one station. Because expansion resources are integrated into the controller, peripheral modules can share a common platform instead of relying on separate interface couplers.
The unit operates from a nominal supply of 24 VDC, and its internal switching supply limits total draw to 20 W to avoid excess heat inside compact enclosures. Data exchange on the integrated Powerlink backbone runs at 100 Mbps, and the physical layer is specified as 100 Base-T. The input stage includes a reverse-polarity diode, so the board is protected if the 24-volt leads are accidentally swapped. By keeping power demand controlled and communication speed fixed, the unit fits cabinets that need predictable electrical loading and stable network behavior.
For local expansion, the backplane carries 8 analog module slots and 16 logical module slots, allowing mixed-signal I/O to be arranged without external cabling. Four network drops are presented through four shielded RJ45 ports, and an internal four-port hub mirrors traffic among these jacks so daisy-chain or star topologies can be used with CAT5e segments up to 100 meters. Field wiring for non-Ethernet modules terminates through a front-panel 9-pin DSUB socket, and this connector supplies 10.4 W of module power while routing clock, enable, and address lines. Daughter cards can be hot-plugged under load without interrupting the real-time cycle, which keeps local wiring concentrated at the controller face and reduces the need for separate expansion links between nearby modules.
