The 7EX470 is a controller module manufactured by B & R Automation within the System 2003 Controllers series. It is intended for distributed machine control where compact processing, fieldbus coordination, and cabinet mounting are required. By acting as a central node, the module manages input and output channels and forwards process data to higher-level PLCs, making it suitable for assembly lines, material handling stations, and small cell retrofits. Its design follows the modular backplane concept used across System 2003, so integration with existing power supplies and expansion cards is direct.
Communication is handled through 2 CAN interfaces, each isolated for noise immunity. When networked, the device sustains a peak transfer rate of 500 kBit/s, allowing timely exchange of control words and diagnostic frames across several hundred nodes. Physical wiring is separated: interface 1 is presented on a 9-pin D-sub plug while interface 2 appears on a 9-pin D-sub socket; this split permits daisy-chain cabling without adapters. The module provides 14.5 W of output power for external I/O boards, so connected sensors receive a stable supply while the backplane remains unloaded. Only one module slot is occupied, leaving neighboring slots clear for specialty functions such as analog measurement or motion expansion.
Power is derived from a nominal bus voltage of 24 VDC, and operation remains stable anywhere within the wider 18 to 30 VDC range, accommodating common industrial power tolerances. Internal circuitry draws 20.0 W at maximum load, which helps with cabinet heat calculations and power supply sizing. Continuous service is specified from 0 to 60 °C, and the electronics can be stored between -25 and 70 °C without performance loss. An IP20 housing protects against fingertip contact and makes the unit suitable for installation inside closed panels. A front-mounted status LED confirms bus activity and fault states at a glance, making routine status checks easier.
