B&R Automation designed the 7DM465.76 for its System 2003 Controllers series. The module combines digital sensing and actuation so a controller can interface with 24 V field circuits from a single slice. Mounted on the Series 2003 rack, it occupies two logical slots, and because it uses an external sensor supply, the rack power bus is unaffected by field loading. By converting incoming contact or transistor states to PLC-level data words and returning command bits to devices such as lamps or solenoids, the unit simplifies panel wiring and shortens response paths in automated equipment.

Sixteen discrete inputs are available, and the PLC scans these 16 input channels at a 24 VDC input voltage level. Each input is debounced by hardware with a ≤1 ms input filter, allowing fast state changes without false triggers. Field wiring is referenced to the common negative rail because the terminals use a sink input circuit. Although channel-to-channel isolation is omitted, a dedicated opto-barrier provides channel-to-PLC isolation so noise is not coupled onto the backplane. Isolation between the input and output sections is not provided, which saves space inside the housing. Total board demand is limited to 1.1 W, keeping heat rise low even in dense racks.

For actuation tasks, the board exposes 16 output channels that use a source configuration to drive the positive side of loads. Each point can deliver 0.5 A per channel at the same 24 VDC line that feeds the inputs, and a group rating of 8.0 A total output current prevents connector overheating. Output transistors are wired directly to field terminals, so channel-to-channel isolation is again omitted. The enclosure carries an IP20 rating, which is suitable for installation inside a protected cabinet where finger-safe terminals are required. This arrangement keeps sensing and actuation on one module, reducing the number of separate I/O slices needed in the rack.
