B&R Automation manufactures the 7DI439.72 digital input module for its System 2003 Controllers series. The card occupies a single slot in the I/O rack and accepts 24 V field signals from sensors or switches, forwarding their states to the host CPU through the internal system bus. By converting on-machine voltage levels into logic data, it allows the PLC to monitor limit switches, safety gates, and operator buttons in real time, which is essential for deterministic machine control.
The module receives power from the backplane, but its signal lines are wired through a front-mounted D-Sub connector. Each channel is referenced to a rated supply of 24 VDC and draws only 4 mA, which reduces loading on connected field devices. Response time is limited mainly by an input delay of 1 ms, allowing fast recognition of signal changes without false triggering. Internally, the sixteen points are arranged in 2 x 8 groups, so both blocks can share discrete commons while maintaining group isolation to reduce crosstalk. Sink or source wiring is supported, and opto-isolators provide galvanic separation from the PLC backplane so external faults do not propagate into the controller electronics.
The card accepts logic-high voltages up to 30 VDC and maintains reliable operation down to a specified minimum of 18 VDC, with a low-state threshold below 5 V and a high-state threshold above 15 V. A voltage monitor trips when the supply drops below 18 V to flag undervoltage conditions early. Total heat dissipation is only 0.4 W, which permits dense cabinet layouts, and the unit processes a full complement of 16 inputs without derating. The front housing and terminal design meet the IP20 protection class, and dedicated isolation to the PLC bus helps reduce common-mode interference in electrically noisy plant environments.
