The 7DI135.7 module is a high-speed digital I/O component designed by B & R Automation for the System 2003 Controllers series. Installed on a backplane beside the CPU, it acts as an interface between sensors, encoders, or comparators and the controller’s task scheduler, allowing deterministic event processing in packaging, printing, or material-handling cells. The part captures pulse trains, performs on-board comparisons, and drives a single transistor output so machine logic can react to position, count, or timing information without routing every signal through the central processor.
The comparator stage switches at 24 VDC and can sustain a continuous load of 0.5 A, enough to actuate small pneumatic valves or indicator lamps. A hardware counter clocked at up to 200 kHz with a depth of 32-bit records long pulse sequences before rollover, while an incremental encoder input is sampled at 50 kHz to maintain position fidelity during rapid axis motion. These hardware-timed resources off-load arithmetic from the PLC cycle, reduce latency, and allow the controller to align motion profiles or reject products when tolerance limits are exceeded without oversampling every discrete input in software.
An auxiliary event counter accepts bursts to 100 kHz, so the board can tally registration marks or flowmeter pulses alongside the primary counter. The input latch introduces only 3 µs of delay, preserving edge accuracy for time-critical sequences, and the transistor output can toggle at a maximum of 20 kHz when generating confirmation strobes or drive-ready signals. Despite these rates, overall board draw stays at 0.4 W, minimizing heat inside compact control cabinets. Four sink-type inputs, each drawing 8 mA at the nominal 24 V rail, accept square-wave signals from proximity switches or differential encoders, and a single comparator output simplifies wiring where just one fast actuator or relay coil must be driven.
