B & R Automation manufactures the 7BP705.0, a rack assembly in the System 2003 Controllers series. This component holds multiple CPU, power supply, or I/O slices and presents an integrated backplane so that a complete programmable logic controller station can be assembled inside a control cabinet. The rack supplies mechanical support, signal coupling, and reference grounding for automation equipment on assembly lines and process skids. It also provides the physical structure needed to keep connected modules aligned during installation and operation.

The rack has a width of 391 mm, giving room for the side sections and the internal card guides needed by the controller modules. Its depth of 23 mm keeps the installation profile shallow so the assembly fits in slender machine enclosures, while the chassis height of 115 mm aligns module card edges with the front opening of standard panel doors. The housing is made from aluminum, and it locks onto an EN 60715 (TH35-7.5) rail, allowing the unit to slide into position before final mounting. After the rail is engaged, each end plate is secured by a hang-and-screw fastening method that helps prevent movement from vibration. A 9-pin DSUB plug-and-socket inter-module connector routes backplane signals from slot to slot and supports communication between installed sections.

For final cabinet layout, the frame requires 30 mm clearance above and 35 mm clearance below to maintain airflow along the module faces. When the slots are populated, the assembly reaches an installed height of 146 mm with modules, which is useful for door-spacing calculations in densely packed racks. The design accepts a 5-module rack capacity, and modules may be inserted in either horizontal or vertical orientation to accommodate different cabinet layouts. Left and right side sections are shipped with the rack, providing shielding continuity once the aluminum front plates are latched in place. This arrangement helps support orderly cabinet integration when wiring paths or surrounding components limit available space.
