Product Description:
The 7AI294.7 analog input card is produced by B&R Automation within the System 2003 Controllers series. It expands a PLC rack with potentiometer channels, allowing the controller to read shaft or position feedback as part of closed-loop motion or process regulation. By converting a sensor’s variable resistance into a digital word, the module links field instrumentation directly to the CPU without requiring external signal conditioners.
Its conversion chain offers 13-bit resolution, delivering 8,192 discrete codes for each input. The absolute error remains within ±0.1% FS at 25 °C, so scaling in the user program requires only minimal offset correction. Each channel is scanned in 4 ms, supporting regular updates for motion or process monitoring. The card provides four single-ended input channels, and because channel-to-PLC isolation is not provided, all connected equipment must use compatible ground references. Supply-voltage miswire protection blocks reverse or excessive voltage, and a per-channel threshold comparator flags values that cross programmed limits. Connection is provided through integrated screw clamps that accept typical control-panel wiring. The module excites passive sensors with a +4.5 V ±3% potentiometer supply, making it compatible with linear slide or wiper assemblies used in machinery.
The sensor loop can draw up to 40 mA, providing sufficient current for the connected potentiometers without overloading the supply rail. Internal electronics dissipate only 0.5 W, which limits cabinet temperature rise in densely populated racks. An IP20 housing prevents accidental finger contact while permitting convection cooling. Short-circuit and overload protection helps protect the backplane fuse during field wiring faults. After conversion, data are sent to the controller as a signed INT data type, simplifying arithmetic in ladder logic or structured-text routines. This format allows the CPU to process positive and negative scaled values without requiring an additional data conversion step.
