The HCMCO3-1A central processor belongs to the HCM Maestro PLC Modules series from B&R Automation. It slots into the Maestro backplane and functions as the primary logic engine in an industrial controller, interpreting ladder logic, structured text, or compiled code to drive actuators and read sensors. By coordinating sequencing, motion, and data-handling routines, the module links higher-level supervisory software with field I/O so automated equipment maintains precise timing and interlock integrity on fast production lines.
Processing speed is governed by a clock of 33 MHz, allowing deterministic scan cycles for motion and safety tasks. Volatile program storage uses 2 MByte of DRAM on a 32-bit data path, so the CPU retrieves operands and instructions in aligned double-word transfers. For variables that change every millisecond, the controller keeps them in 512 KByte of SRAM, avoiding repeated flash writes and guaranteeing retention during brief power dips through battery backup. A dedicated Memory Management Unit enforces page boundaries, isolating each task’s stack and heap when multiple user applications coexist under hard real-time deadlines.
Permanent system code and user boot code reside in 1 MByte of FPROM, so the module powers up consistently after maintenance or extended outages. At startup, it loads the OS-9/68030 real-time operating system, supplying preemptive multitasking and POSIX-style services tailored to the 68k instruction set. Communication with external devices is handled through a dedicated programming port rated for RS232/TTY signaling and a selectable network port supporting RS232/RS485 half-duplex wiring, and both channels allow baud-rate adjustment from the setup menu. Because no PCMCIA interface is present, expansions such as additional Ethernet or memory cards must be attached through separate bus modules.
