B&R Automation's HCMCO1-A module belongs to the HCM Maestro PLC Modules series and functions as the central processing card within a Maestro rack. The board runs application code and monitors machine signals during automated operation. It also issues deterministic control commands to drives and distributed I/O. This role makes the module the computational core of many discrete manufacturing and process control installations.
The primary CPU is a Motorola 68000 operating with a system clock of 12.5 MHz. This clock rate supports processor timing and coordinates communication with the card's peripheral devices. Application variables and intermediate results reside in 512 KB of SRAM. Because this memory is volatile, the backplane battery must remain active to preserve stored data during a power loss. A 16-bit bus width allows the processor to transfer 16 bits of data in parallel, affecting access latency and the amount of memory that can be reached directly without paging. The board boots the OS-9/68000 real-time operating system, which provides multitasking, task scheduling, file handling, and communication services through established kernel calls. These operating system services reduce the amount of supporting code that must be included in the control application.
Floating-point calculations are handled by the companion 68881 arithmetic coprocessor, allowing trigonometric calculations and PID routines to run without placing the entire mathematical workload on the integer processor. Two independent serial ports connect the module to external equipment. Port 1 provides RS232/TTY signaling for devices such as local operator panels, while port 2 supports selectable RS232/RS485 signaling for remote drives or HMI stations over longer cable runs. The board does not contain a memory management unit, so all tasks operate within a flat address space. Applications must therefore manage memory carefully because hardware-based separation between task address spaces is unavailable. The design also omits a PCMCIA slot, which keeps the board footprint compatible with earlier Maestro rack frames.
