The HCM01-A is a programmable logic controller module produced by B&R Automation for the HCM Maestro PLC Modules series. Installed in a multi-slot rack, the module provides the central processing resources needed to coordinate discrete I/O, motion commands, and user tasks in industrial automation cells. It executes control logic and manages connected equipment through its processor, operating system, memory, and serial communication channels.
At its core is a Motorola 68000 CPU clocked at 12.5 MHz; this frequency determines the instruction cycle time available for ladder logic, structured text, or C routines. Floating-point calculations can be offloaded to an optional 68881 arithmetic coprocessor, allowing faster trigonometric or PID calculations without slowing the main processor. Program variables move across a 16-bit data bus, so word-wide transfers can be completed in one read or write cycle. The real-time kernel uses OS-9/68000, an embedded multitasking operating system that manages task scheduling and file access. The module does not have a memory management unit, so all processes share a flat address space. Deterministic timing is maintained without the delays associated with dynamic paging.
For controller networking, the primary channel supports RS-232/TTY signaling, while a secondary port can switch between RS-232 and RS-485 modes to connect with drives, operator panels, or peer PLCs over serial lines. User code and retentive data reside in 512 kilobytes of fast SRAM, providing storage for medium-sized control projects when used with external flash storage on companion cards. The serial interfaces support direct communication with both single-ended and differential devices, giving the controller flexibility across different equipment layouts. A PCMCIA interface is not included, so removable program cards cannot be inserted directly into the module. Memory expansion and external storage must instead be handled through compatible components elsewhere in the rack. The flat memory architecture keeps process access direct while leaving memory protection to the operating environment and application design.
