The 8V1640.001-2 servo drive is engineered by B&R Automation within the 8V1 ACOPOS Servo Drives series. It converts three-phase mains power into a controlled DC supply and pulse-width-modulated output that energizes synchronous or induction motors. This conversion enables closed-loop speed and torque control for packaging machines, pick-and-place units, and other coordinated axes in industrial automation. The unit can deliver 0.5 A from the 24 V logic supply for encoders or sensors on the same axis.
The power stage supplies a continuous phase current of 64 A RMS, while short acceleration bursts can reach 200 A RMS without derating. A DC bus precharge circuit engages when the internal link reaches 455 VDC. Energy is stored in 3,300 µF of film capacitance and buffered further by 32,800 µF on the 24 V auxiliary rail. Line protection is provided by a fast-acting 30 A fuse, and inrush current at 400 VAC is limited to 26 A. The drive presents an installed load of 54 kVA, so cabinet feeders and breakers must be sized accordingly. Current is switched at a nominal frequency of 10 kHz, balancing motor noise with semiconductor losses. When an external braking resistor is connected, regenerated energy is diverted away from the DC link.
For high-speed positioning tasks, the inverter can generate an output frequency of up to 598 Hz, allowing small-frame servomotors to spin above base speed during rapid moves. When kinetic energy must be dissipated, the transistorized brake output supplies 3 A, and the required resistor of 2.5 Ω helps prevent overvoltage during heavy deceleration. Motor cables may be routed up to 25 m without exceeding the stated voltage rise limits. The housing also supports 24 V brake control through dedicated terminals. The enclosure weighs 24.1 kg and measures 276 mm wide, allowing it to occupy one slot of a standard ACOPOS backplane while maintaining a low center of gravity for swing-out panel mounting.
