The 8MSA5S.E1-D400-1 is a three-phase synchronous motor produced by B&R Automation within the 8MS Three Phase Synchronous Motors series. In automated machinery, it converts electrical energy into precisely regulated mechanical motion so a servodrive can position loads accurately and maintain process speed. The motor includes a feedback encoder for closed-loop control and an internal holding brake for axes that must remain stationary when power is removed. This arrangement suits coordinated multi-axis systems such as pick-and-place modules, packaging stations, and indexing tables where controlled torque and stable speed are required.
At its rated operating point, the motor reaches 3000 rpm, a speed that supports fast cyclic motion in compact automation axes and continuous production equipment. The integrated holding brake provides 15 Nm of torque to lock the shaft during power-off conditions. Motion feedback is supplied by an EnDat encoder with 512 lines per revolution, and the feedback channel supports signal frequencies of at least 100 kHz at -3 dB for responsive control loops. The encoder returns absolute multi-turn position data, and the feedback connection exits from the top of the housing to simplify cable routing.
The encoder maintains an angular precision of ±60 arcseconds and stores up to 4096 revolutions, so the drive can recover position after power cycling without a homing move. Thermal management relies on self-cooling, which allows operation without an auxiliary fan. The motor has a smooth shaft that works well with clamped hubs, and the size 5 frame helps keep inertia low for rapid acceleration. Because no oil seal is fitted, the motor is better suited to clean, dry environments than to oil-lubricated gearbox applications where lubricant exposure is expected.
