The 8MSA5L.R0-B4 is a three-phase synchronous motor produced by B & R Automation as a member of the 8MS Three Phase Synchronous Motors series. It is intended to drive axes in machines that require consistent torque and precise electronic commutation. Within an automation cell, the unit converts electrical energy from the inverter into mechanical rotation that can be coupled directly to gearboxes, ball screws, or belt transmissions for coordinated motion control. Its synchronous design allows the connected inverter to regulate speed and torque in response to commands from the machine controller.
This model operates at a nominal speed of 3000 rpm, providing a suitable operating point for high-speed motion applications. Heat is removed solely through its self-cooling design, so no external fan or liquid circuit is necessary for temperature management. Power and feedback conductors exit on side B, simplifying cable routing when the motor is mounted against a machine frame. Rotor position is reported by a resolver, enabling sinusoidal current control even in areas with high electromagnetic noise. The unit is supplied without a holding brake; therefore, applications that must secure a vertical load during a power loss require an external mechanical lock or holding torque from the drive.
The stator uses the motor size 5 envelope and has a length index of L, which provides an extended stack for higher continuous torque. The shaft does not include an oil seal, so the installation must protect the motor from direct coolant spray and lubricant ingress.
