The 8MSA5L.E3-B4 three-phase synchronous motor is produced by B & R Automation within the 8MS Three Phase Synchronous Motors series. It is intended to drive servo axes in automated equipment, converting electrical power into tightly regulated torque under vector control. Integrated position feedback and electronic commutation allow machine controllers to execute repeatable movements for pick-and-place units, indexing tables, and packaging stations. The motor provides controlled rotary motion for applications that require accurate positioning, responsive acceleration, and stable speed regulation under changing loads.
The motor housing uses a self-cooling system, so no auxiliary fan or liquid circuit is required to keep the winding temperature within operating limits. The feedback system uses an EnDat inductive sensor that transmits digital position data to the connected drive. Its scanning disk has 32 lines, while the receiver supports a frequency response of ≥ 6 kHz (−3 dB) for high-speed servo control. Power and feedback connectors are mounted on the B side, simplifying cable routing along linear axes and through compact machine assemblies. The mechanical configuration uses size code 5 and length code L, providing the stator stack needed for relatively high torque within the series. Because the motor does not have an oil seal, the shaft should operate in a clean, dry environment. The absence of a holding brake means that vertical loads require an external clamping mechanism when motor power is removed.
The feedback system has an angular tolerance of ±400″, supporting accurate position measurement throughout controlled motion. Its multi-turn encoder design retains absolute position information across multiple shaft rotations. During continuous operation, the rotor can reach a rated speed of 3000 rpm, providing a broad operating range for speed-controlled and positioning applications. The drive can distinguish as many as 4096 revolutions before index rollover, which allows the controller to track movement over an extended rotational range. Torque capacity is large relative to other frame codes in the series, providing additional acceleration capability for moderate-inertia loads. A smooth shaft supports secure installation with press-fit or clamping couplings and enables backlash-free torque transfer to precision gearheads. This shaft configuration also avoids the alignment requirements associated with a keyed coupling interface.
