The 8MSA4X.E1-31 is a three-phase synchronous servo motor produced by B & R Automation within the 8MS Three Phase Synchronous Motors series. As a compact rotary actuator, it converts drive current from a matched servo inverter into controlled mechanical torque, allowing precise positioning and velocity control on automated axes, pick-and-place heads, and packaging machinery. Its self-cooling housing eliminates the need for external fans, reducing the number of components required around the motor. Power and feedback conductors are routed on the A-side to simplify cable routing between the motor and the control cabinet.
During continuous operation, the motor reaches a rated speed of 3000 rpm, providing a baseline mechanical frequency for gear-ratio selection. Position data come from an optical encoder that produces 512 lines per revolution; with quadrature decoding, the drive receives 2,048 discrete increments for accurate closed-loop control. Signal integrity is maintained at a bandwidth of ≥ 100 kHz at -3 dB, allowing the feedback channel to support rapid changes in speed and position. Mechanical alignment errors are reduced by the encoder’s angular precision of ±60 arcseconds, which helps limit cumulative positioning drift in multi-axis assemblies. Communication and parameter storage use the EnDat serial interface, allowing the drive to identify motor data automatically at power-up.
The feedback unit uses a multi-turn encoder that tracks shaft revolutions and retains a count of 4096 turns after power is removed, allowing the axis to restart without a homing cycle. Drive output is matched to the motor’s extra-large relative rated torque classification, supporting high acceleration of moderate-inertia loads without exceeding thermal limits. Torque is transferred through a keyed shaft, which accepts standard hub-type couplings and provides positive engagement under changing loads. The motor does not include a holding brake, so an external load-locking mechanism is required when an axis must remain stationary without drive power. No oil seal is fitted, so contaminants should be kept away from the shaft opening.
