The 8MSA4S.R0-D2 is a three-phase synchronous motor produced by B&R Automation for the 8MS Three-Phase Synchronous Motors series. Designed as a compact drive element, it converts electrical energy into controlled rotary motion for positioning axes, conveyor sections, and general machine automation. When integrated with a compatible AC servo drive, the motor supplies feedback and torque within a closed control loop, allowing programmable controllers to maintain repeatable speed and angular position under variable loads. The compact housing suits applications where installation space is limited but responsive motion remains necessary.
The motor has a size 4 frame and an S-length housing, providing a compact mounting footprint for lightweight machinery. Electrical and feedback terminations use a top-mounted connection, which simplifies cable routing in cabinets with vertical wireways. Heat dissipates through the motor surface because the unit uses self-cooling, eliminating the need for an external fan or liquid cooling circuit. The motor operates at a rated speed of 3000 rpm when paired with a suitable inverter. Its continuous torque capability is classified as small, making the motor appropriate for modest loads such as indexing tables and compact conveyor sections. Position feedback is generated by a single-turn resolver, which produces sine and cosine voltage signals that tolerate electrical noise and elevated ambient temperatures.
Feedback accuracy includes a resolver nonlinearity of ±1 angular minute and a resolution window of ±10 angular minutes. These values indicate the permitted variation between the measured electrical angle and the mechanical position of the shaft. The resolver uses the proprietary BRX interface format, providing compatibility with corresponding B&R drive interfaces without custom signal scaling. Mechanical power is transferred through a smooth shaft end, which accommodates clamping hubs and compatible gearboxes without requiring a keyed connection. The motor does not include a holding brake, so external locking or energized motor torque is required when a load must remain stationary. An oil seal is not installed, and the shaft area should therefore be protected from pressurized lubricants and aggressive coolants. Appropriate coupling alignment and cable strain relief help prevent unnecessary mechanical loading during operation.
