The 8MSA4M.E3-67 is a three-phase synchronous motor produced by B&R Automation for the 8MS Three Phase Synchronous Motors series. It converts inverter output into mechanical rotation for positioning and speed-controlled axes in automated machinery. The motor belongs to the medium torque class and is suitable for applications such as indexing tables and packaging spindles with moderate load demands. Its synchronous design allows a compatible drive to regulate shaft speed and position through closed-loop control. This arrangement supports repeatable motion when the connected load changes during a machine cycle.
The motor is rated for 4500 rpm, providing a high base speed without requiring gear multiplication. It uses a Size 4 frame with an active-stack length of M, which establish its mounting footprint and continuous thermal capacity. Heat is removed through self-cooling, eliminating the need for an external blower and reducing the space required for auxiliary cooling equipment. Power and feedback leads exit from the A-side of the housing, allowing cable trays to follow a fixed connection direction. The motor has no holding brake, so vertical or suspended loads require drive-applied torque or an external locking mechanism when the axis is stationary. A keyed shaft provides positive torque transmission to couplings, pulleys, or other driven components. The front of the motor does not have an oil seal, so the adjoining machine interface must prevent lubricant from reaching the motor. This shaft arrangement also requires the connected equipment to provide suitable protection against contamination at the coupling interface.
Position feedback is provided by an EnDat inductive encoder that supports clock frequencies of at least 6 kHz at -3 dB, permitting short control-loop cycle times. Incremental interpolation uses a mechanical precision value of ±400 and a native resolution of 32 lines. The encoder tracks motion over 4096 revolutions, allowing the control system to determine absolute position across extended multi-turn movements. Stored rotational progress remains available after a power cycle, reducing the need for the axis to repeat a complete homing movement after startup. The inductive feedback method provides the drive with position information for electronic commutation as well as closed-loop speed and position regulation.
