Product Description:

B & R Automation’s 8MSA4M.E1-D2 synchronous motor belongs to the 8MS Three Phase Synchronous Motors series. It serves as a compact drive element for positioning or velocity-controlled axes in automated machinery, converting electrical power from a matched inverter into rotary motion with servo-grade accuracy. The design suits installations where encoder feedback and minimal ancillary cooling help keep the machine layout compact. This arrangement supports compact servo axes that require accurate starts, stops, and repeatable speed control. Shared mechanical dimensions with other 8MS units preserve a consistent mounting interface across the product line.

Power and feedback connectors exit on the top of the housing, allowing vertical cable runs inside compact enclosures and helping keep wiring away from the shaft area. The rotor is rated for a nominal speed of 3000 rpm, so a 50 Hz or 60 Hz line-synchronized inverter can operate the shaft without exceeding mechanical limits. Thermal regulation relies on a self-cooling fanless construction that removes heat through the frame surfaces. Position feedback is supplied by an optical encoder that provides 512 lines, which supports precise motion control after quadrature evaluation. Signal integrity is maintained up to 100 kHz bandwidth at −3 dB, and absolute angle error stays within ±60″. The motor is supplied without a holding brake and without an oil seal, and it uses a smooth shaft end. Size code 4 with length code M gives the unit its form factor and inertia range.

Feedback communication employs the EnDat protocol, letting the drive read absolute position data over a single bidirectional channel and reducing separate feedback wiring. The integrated sensor tracks up to 4096 complete revolutions and retains the count during power cycles, so homing routines are unnecessary after restart. Because it is a Multi-turn encoder, the motor can resume motion commands immediately when power returns. Its torque class is Medium, which suits applications that need a balanced mix of acceleration and continuous running capability. Typical uses include conveyor modules, pick-and-place heads, and compact indexing tables where repeatable position feedback is required.
