The 8MSA4M.E0-31 is a three-phase synchronous motor manufactured by B&R Automation for the 8MS Three Phase Synchronous Motors series. The unit supplies rotational motion for positioning axes and conveyors in automated machinery where precise feedback is required. The motor body has size code 4 and length code M, providing a compact footprint for machines with limited motor stack depth. Its synchronous design supports controlled acceleration and repeatable motion when paired with a compatible drive controller.
Power and signal cables enter on the A-side, simplifying cable routing when the motor is mounted in a confined machine frame. Continuous operation is supported by a self-cooling housing, so no external blower is necessary. The mechanical output reaches 3000 rpm at the rated operating point. Its electromagnetic design provides a medium torque profile that balances acceleration capability with thermal loading. Rotor position is tracked by an encoder that provides 512 lines for precise motion feedback. Internal interpolation through the EnDat interface increases the usable position count while maintaining reliable digital signal transmission. The speed-feedback bandwidth is at least 100 kHz at -3 dB, allowing high-dynamic axes to operate without encoder saturation.
The motor is supplied without a holding brake, so static holding must be provided by energized drive torque or an external mechanical device. Loads that must remain fixed after power is removed require a separate brake or locking mechanism. The encoder provides single-turn feedback through the EnDat protocol with a precision of ±60 arcseconds. Torque is transferred through a keyed shaft end that mates with standard keyed couplings and provides positive mechanical engagement. The output shaft has no oil seal, so external gasketing may be needed where lubricant, dust, or moisture could reach the shaft opening. This configuration limits added rotational inertia and reduces the number of internal wear components. The motor is suitable for indexing tables and carton erectors that require quick starts under moderate continuous loads.
