The 8MSA4L.E3-32 is a three-phase synchronous motor produced by B & R Automation for the 8MS Three Phase Synchronous Motors series. Designed as a direct-drive component for industrial automation, it delivers closed-loop rotary motion when paired with a compatible inverter and encoder interface. By eliminating belt or gearbox reductions, the motor simplifies mechanical layouts while supplying consistent torque and speed for pick-and-place axes, feeder lines, and light machining spindles. Its direct connection to the driven equipment also reduces the number of transmission components that require alignment and routine maintenance.
At its nominal operating point, the rotor reaches 3000 rpm, a speed rating established by the stator winding and permanent-magnet pole count. The relative rated torque is classified as large, allowing the axis to accelerate moderate inertial loads without requiring an oversized frame. The integrated brake clamps the shaft during power loss and delivers 8 Nm of static holding torque, preventing vertical or suspended tooling from drifting. Position feedback is produced by an optical scale offering 32 lines per revolution; after interpolation, the drive resolves fine increments with an accuracy of ±400 arc-seconds. Signal integrity is maintained up to an encoder bandwidth of ≥ 6 kHz (-3 dB), so high-gain control loops remain stable even at the maximum electrical frequency. An inductive EnDat channel provides single-cable communication with the control cabinet.
The feedback assembly uses a multi-turn encoder that tracks up to 4096 revolutions, enabling homing-free recovery after machine shutdowns. Heat is removed through a self-cooling housing, so no external blower or liquid circuit is needed for standard duty cycles. Power and feedback connectors are oriented on the A-side, simplifying cable routing inside compact gantry carriages. The smooth shaft end mates with friction-lock couplings, while the absence of an oil seal reduces running friction where an external seal is not required. The motor has size code 4 and length designation L, providing consistent envelope dimensions within the broader 8MS platform.
