The 8MSA4L.E1-42 is a three-phase synchronous servo motor produced by B & R Automation for the 8MS Three Phase Synchronous Motors series. Intended for industrial automation, the unit converts electrical power into controlled mechanical rotation so machine axes can be positioned quickly and repeatably. This model has motor size 4 and length code L, placing it in the middle of the platform’s frame range, where its comparatively high torque output supports packaging lines, pick-and-place stations, and other cyclic applications.
Mechanical integration is simplified because the power and feedback connectors are located on side A, and a smooth shaft supports the use of precision clamping couplings. The motor reaches a rated speed of 6000 rpm, allowing lower gear ratios without sacrificing linear throughput. The winding is cooled by surface convection, and this self-cooling design eliminates the need for forced airflow. The motor has a large relative rated torque, providing ample turning force even when the machine operates at low speed. It is supplied without a holding brake, so an external brake or another retaining mechanism is required when stationary loads must remain fixed after motor power is removed. The lack of an oil seal reduces shaft friction, but the installation must provide suitable protection if lubricant or other fluids are present near the shaft opening.
Position feedback is provided by a multi-turn EnDat encoder with an optical resolution of 512 lines. After internal interpolation, the feedback system provides an angular accuracy of ±60 arcseconds and can count as many as 4,096 complete revolutions, allowing absolute position recovery after a power interruption. The digital channel supports carrier frequencies of at least 100 kHz at the -3 dB point, helping maintain reliable signal transmission over long machine cables in electrically noisy areas. Its multi-turn capability records the shaft position across multiple revolutions, eliminating the need to repeat a homing sequence whenever control power is restored. Encoder data also allows a compatible drive controller to monitor rotor position continuously and correct motion errors during acceleration, constant-speed operation, and deceleration.
