Product Description:
The 8MSA3S.R0-42 is a three-phase synchronous motor produced by B&R Automation within the 8MS Three Phase Synchronous Motors series. It is intended to convert drive current from a matched inverter into mechanical rotation that positions or transports loads in automated machinery. By integrating into closed-loop motion systems, the unit supplies continuous torque and speed control for pick-and-place stations, indexing tables, or light conveyor axes in general industrial automation.
The motor’s nominal speed reaches 6000 rpm, allowing fast cycle execution when paired with gearless direct drives. A self-cooling construction dissipates heat through the housing without external fans. Rotor position is detected by a resolver, providing analog sine-cosine feedback that withstands contamination and vibration better than optical encoders. Power and feedback conductors are routed on the A-side of the stator, which sets the wiring direction during mechanical layout. Up to 200 N of permissible axial force may be applied to the shaft during mounting, so couplings or pinions can be pressed on without exceeding bearing limits. The motor is delivered without a holding brake and carries a small relative torque rating, making it suitable for low-inertia loads that do not require power-off shaft locking.
Compact geometry also influences installation. The housing uses length code S, which is the shortest version in the family, while frame designation 3 sets the flange and bolt circle for medium-power modules. Electrical accuracy is supported by resolver nonlinearity of ±1 angular minute, while overall precision of ±10 angular minutes supports standard control loop tuning. The BRX resolver design eliminates extra calibration devices, and the shaft end has a smooth shaft interface that accepts shrink-fit collars or plain clamping hubs. Because no oil seal is fitted, the installation should remain free of pressurized lubricant that could migrate into the stator cavity.
