The 8MSA3S.E3-I6 is a three-phase synchronous motor from B & R Automation in the 8MS Three Phase Synchronous Motors series. It serves as a drive element in industrial automation, converting commanded current from a servo inverter into precise torque and velocity for tooling, packaging, and material-handling axes. With a Size 3 frame and a short S-length stator, the motor fits tight spaces and keeps moving mass low for fast dynamic response.
The motor relies on a self-cooling housing, so convection alone keeps the windings within thermal limits, and no external blower is required. Its nominal output speed is 6000 rpm, supporting high surface velocities while remaining within the servo drive’s control range. During assembly, the shaft can accept up to 200 N of axial force, helping prevent bearing damage when couplings are pressed onto it. Rotor position feedback is supplied by an inductive EnDat encoder that uses magnetic modulation rather than optical tracks for improved tolerance of contamination. The feedback disk carries 32 lines, which the drive interpolates to calculate the electrical angle accurately across the speed range.
Dynamic loop accuracy is supported by an encoder bandwidth of 6 kHz at −3 dB, allowing tight current regulation during rapid acceleration. Each electrical cycle is referenced with an angular error no greater than ±400 arcseconds. The multi-turn counter stores up to 4096 revolutions, so absolute position is retained after power loss without requiring a homing routine. The output end has a smooth shaft, simplifying connection to clamp couplings when zero backlash is required. Connections exit on the B side of the stator, which simplifies cable routing in right-angle installations. The motor is supplied without a holding brake or oil seal, making it suitable for low-inertia axes where rapid speed response is prioritized over continuous stall torque.
