The 8MSA3S.E1-B6 is a three-phase synchronous motor engineered by B&R Automation and supplied within the 8MS Three Phase Synchronous Motors series. This compact S-length, size-3 unit serves as the rotary actuator in motion axes that demand repeatable speed regulation and closed-loop positioning. Connected to a matching servo drive, it delivers torque to conveyors, gantries, or small robots. The motor provides an electrical alternative to pneumatic systems while maintaining the dynamic accuracy required in automated production cells.
Its power and feedback connectors are on the B side of the housing, simplifying cable routing inside machine frames. A self-cooling design removes heat through the stator surface and eliminates the need for external blowers. The motor reaches a nominal speed of 3000 rpm, and its relative rated torque is classified as small, making it suitable for moderate-load applications. An integrated holding brake rated at 4 Nm secures vertical or indexing shafts when power is off. Position feedback comes from a multi-turn EnDat encoder that provides 512 lines of incremental resolution with an absolute accuracy of ±60 arcseconds. This feedback supports fine position interpolation by the drive controller during closed-loop operation.
The encoder bandwidth reaches at least 100 kHz, allowing the control loop to follow rapid position changes without excessive phase lag. Within its multi-turn range, the system counts 4096 full revolutions, providing absolute feedback across long travel distances. During installation, up to 200 N of axial force can be applied to the shaft, allowing compatible press-fit couplings to be installed. Drive torque is delivered through a smooth shaft that accepts clamp collars or adhesive hubs to minimize backlash. The motor does not have an oil seal, so the shaft should not operate in oil-filled chambers. Splash exposure should also be avoided to protect the front bearing from contamination and premature wear.
