The 8MSA3L.R0-D3 synchronous motor is produced by B & R Automation within the 8MS Three Phase Synchronous Motors series. Designed for integration with inverter drives, it converts three-phase electrical power into controlled shaft rotation for production lines, pick-and-place axes, and indexing tables that demand coordinated motion. Its electromagnetic design keeps the rotor speed synchronized with the command frequency, supporting accurate positioning and repeatable cycle times in automated machinery. This operating principle allows the connected inverter to regulate speed and torque without the slip associated with induction motors.
A rated speed of 3000 rpm provides a high continuous rotor velocity under nominal load, enabling short move times without stalling. The motor has a large relative rated torque, indicating that the frame supplies high torsional output for rapid acceleration of moderate inertial loads. Heat created by copper and iron losses is removed through self-cooling, so no auxiliary blower or liquid loop is required. Power and feedback leads exit from the top of the housing, simplifying routing through vertical cable ducts while providing adequate space for the required bend radii. Rotor position is measured by a resolver, which supplies sine-cosine signals over the full 360-degree electrical cycle for commutation and speed feedback. These signals allow the drive to track shaft angle while the motor accelerates, runs at a steady speed, or changes direction.
During assembly, the bearings can tolerate up to 200 N of axial force, allowing press-fit couplings or pulley installation without damaging the thrust washers. Torque is transmitted through a keyed shaft end that prevents the motor shaft from slipping against the driven element. The BRX resolver maintains nonlinearity within ±1 angular minute and aggregate precision within ±10 angular minutes, supporting tight position control at the connected drive. The motor has size 3 and length L, which establish the frame dimensions and active stack geometry. It is supplied without a holding brake, so drive torque or an external mechanism must secure static loads when power is removed. The shaft also has no oil seal, making external protection necessary where lubricant could reach the motor housing.
