The 8MSA3L.E3-I6 is a three-phase synchronous motor produced by B & R Automation within the 8MS Three Phase Synchronous Motors series. Intended for closed-loop industrial axes, the unit converts drive current into controlled torque and speed for feeders, pick-and-place stations, and indexing tables. It uses motor size 3 and length code L, providing compact mounting and a relatively large rated torque for its frame. The motor has neither an internal holding brake nor an oil seal, making it suitable for systems that use external mechanical restraints and do not require shaft sealing.
Power, feedback, and brake conductors exit on the B-side, allowing cable trays to remain clear on the opposite face of the machine. Thermal management relies on self-cooling, so heat dissipates through the housing fins without an additional blower. Position feedback is provided by an EnDat inductive encoder whose control electronics maintain signal integrity at frequencies up to ≥ 6 kHz at the -3 dB point. Within that bandwidth, the read head produces 32 lines per revolution for rotor position measurement. Its memory tracks absolute position across multiple turns because it uses a multi-turn encoder. The EnDat interface transmits this position data to the servo drive for closed-loop speed and position control during automated motion.
Mechanical installation can impose an axial force of up to 200 N on the shaft without reducing bearing life, providing sufficient capacity for typical press-fit couplings. During operation, the rotor can reach 6000 rpm at rated voltage while maintaining the speed control required by servo-driven machinery. The encoder distinguishes 4096 complete revolutions, allowing the controller to recover the absolute rotor angle after power loss without running a homing routine. A smooth shaft eliminates keyway stress concentrations and accommodates shrink-fit hubs or clamping collars. This shaft interface distributes coupling forces evenly around the circumference and permits secure torque transfer when the selected coupling is installed with the correct clamping pressure.
