The 8MSA3L.E0-B4 is a three-phase synchronous motor manufactured by B&R Automation within the 8MS Three Phase Synchronous Motors series. It operates as a direct-drive element that supplies commanded torque and speed to controlled motion axes. Typical applications include positioning tables, pick-and-place heads, and other automated equipment that requires precise rotary movement. Its self-cooling housing removes heat without external airflow, reducing the need for auxiliary cooling equipment around the motor.
At a nominal speed of 3000 rpm, the motor supports high-speed positioning and velocity-controlled operation. The EnDat encoder generates 512 lines per revolution, providing detailed position feedback to the connected servo drive. Its signal chain maintains a response within -3 dB at frequencies up to ≥100 kHz, allowing rapid position sampling during dynamic movement. Angular accuracy remains within ±60″, supporting fine contour control and coordinated motion in multi-axis systems. During installation, the shaft can withstand axial forces of up to 200 N, helping protect the bearings when a coupling is pressed into place. Proper coupling tools and controlled installation force should be used to avoid applying unnecessary stress to the shaft assembly.
Power and feedback conductors exit on the B side, allowing cables to follow a consistent routing path when multiple motors are installed together. Rotor position is measured by a single-turn encoder, which provides an absolute position value throughout one complete mechanical revolution. The motor has a large relative torque capability, making it suitable for applications that require a high overload margin within the available frame size. Mechanical output is transmitted through a smooth shaft, allowing clamping or bonded hubs to be installed without a keyway. Size code 3 indicates the motor’s frame dimensions, while length code L identifies its electromagnetic stack length. The motor does not include an oil seal, so the shaft interface should be kept away from lubricants or other fluids that could enter the bearing area. It is also supplied without a holding brake, which means stationary loads must be retained by drive torque or an external locking device when required.
