The 8MSA2L.E5-I8 is a three-phase synchronous motor produced by B&R Automation for the 8MS Three Phase Synchronous Motors series. It is intended for servo axes that require precise electrical commutation and rapid speed regulation in industrial automation cells, packaging machines, and material-handling gantries. The integrated encoder supplies position feedback to the paired drive controller, while the internal brake provides static holding force when the drive is disabled. This arrangement supports controlled positioning and prevents the shaft from moving when the motor is not producing torque.
This model reaches a nominal speed of 6000 rpm, allowing high surface velocities with compact transmission ratios. Heat generated in the stator is removed through self-cooling across the housing surface, eliminating the need for an external blower. Power and signal conductors exit on side B, which simplifies cable routing when the opposite face is positioned against a mounting plate. The EnDat feedback system provides 512 lines per revolution and maintains an angular accuracy of ±60 arcseconds. These values support accurate position measurement and controlled movement throughout each revolution. The encoder has a frequency response of 200 kHz (-3 dB), allowing the control system to detect speed and position changes during rapid operating cycles.
The motor uses a multi-turn encoder that counts up to 4,096 revolutions, enabling absolute position detection after a power interruption. A permanent-magnet holding brake supplies 1.8 Nm of static torque to maintain the shaft position when the drive is disabled. During installation, the shaft can withstand an inward axial force of up to 200 N without damaging the bearings. Its smooth shaft end mates directly with clamp couplings or pulleys, providing a simple connection without a keyway. The motor has size 2 geometry and length code L, which provide a relatively high rated torque within its frame envelope. No oil seal is fitted, so the motor requires external protection when installed in areas exposed to oil, coolant, or other liquid splashes.
