By combining field-level connectivity and network switching in one housing, it reduces wiring between sensors, actuators, and the supervisory PLC while maintaining real-time data exchange.
A processor clock of 100 MHz handles protocol tasks and user functions, backed by 32 MB of DRAM for variable buffers and a separate 32 kB of SRAM that retains critical flags during resets. Application code is stored on a removable CompactFlash card, so programs can be updated without replacing the unit. The single Ethernet interface operates at 100Base-T, providing deterministic POWERLINK timing when connected to the machine backbone. Two CAN channels support legacy drives or distributed I/O, while one X2X Link master port passes deterministic traffic to downstream remote nodes.
