B&R Automation manufactures the 8AC140.60-3, a communication and I/O expansion device in the 8AC Powerlink Modules series. The module occupies two rack slots and links distributed sensors and actuators to a real-time Powerlink network so that motion controllers and PLCs can exchange process data without additional gateways in packaging, conveying, and material-handling systems. Its layout lets a control rack combine network communication and local signal handling in the same modular platform.
The analog front end samples input signals with a cutoff frequency of 10 kHz and a resolution of 12-bit, making it suitable for moderately fast temperature, pressure, or position feedback loops. Three digital points are available, and each high-side transistor output can sink or source up to 500 mA; a switching frequency of 100 Hz keeps inductive loads within thermal limits. All user code executes on a 32-bit CPU clocked at 100 MHz. Volatile program variables reside in 32 MB of DRAM, while fast task buffers use 32 kB of SRAM. Long-term logic and recipes are stored on a removable CompactFlash card, and total power consumption is 4.5 W, which helps limit cabinet heat when multiple slices are installed.
Network interfaces are integrated: the controller side communicates over deterministic Ethernet at 100 Base-T, fieldbus translation can reach Profibus rates of 12 Mbit/s, and a diagnostic serial port supports RS-232 transmissions up to 115.2 kbaud. A lithium backup cell rated at 3 V / 950 mAh preserves clock and retain data during power loss, so production counters and fault logs survive extended shutdowns. Program execution starts from CompactFlash at power-up, and the CPU’s internal timers coordinate I/O activity during operation. This helps the module maintain stable timing for analog processing, digital signaling, and diagnostic functions.
