The 8AC140.60-1 is a communication and processing module manufactured by B&R Automation for the 8AC Powerlink Modules series. Supplied as a double-width plug-in module, it occupies backplane positions 1 and 2 in the system rack. Its role is to add deterministic Powerlink networking and local signal-handling capability to machine controllers, allowing distributed drives, sensors, and operator stations to exchange time-critical data within industrial automation cells.
An x86 Intel-compatible CPU operates at 100 MHz to execute protocol stacks and user logic. Runtime variables are held in 8 MB of DRAM, while configuration registers reside in 32 kB of SRAM for quick retrieval after power-up. Application code is stored on a removable Compact Flash card, which simplifies software loading and replacement. Even under full load, the board draws only 4.5 W, minimizing enclosure heating. The design also offers up to three digital I/O points for simple on-off status feedback, extending controller flexibility without a separate slice. These resources support local data handling, cyclic buffering, and basic real-time calculations between fieldbus scans.
Communication interfaces are concentrated on the front panel. A single CAN port transmits at up to 500 kBit/s, one PROFIBUS-DP slave channel reaches 12 MBit/s, and the RS-232 connector supports 115.2 kBaud for serial devices or setup access. Each interface serves a distinct communication role, helping separate fieldbus traffic from point-to-point serial exchange. For sensing tasks, the integrated converter samples analog signals with 12-bit resolution, allowing temperature or pressure inputs to be forwarded over the selected fieldbus alongside deterministic Powerlink traffic. The front-panel connections support integration of serial devices, fieldbus nodes, and analog input sources within the same control platform.
