For synchronous motion applications on a Powerlink network, B&R Automation supplies the 8AC122.60-4 interface in the 8AC Powerlink Modules series. The module converts two-phase BRX resolver feedback into digital position information and publishes it on the higher-level bus, enabling the central CPU to track shaft angle in real time. Used in packaging lines and pick-and-place gantries, it serves as a dedicated sensor node that eliminates the need for separate encoder cards inside the main cabinet.
The core measurement path delivers an angular resolution of 14 bits/rev, giving 16,384 discrete positions per mechanical rotation. A signal bandwidth of 2.5 kHz lets the electronics follow rapid speed changes while filtering noise outside the motion spectrum. To protect upstream electronics, the resolver inputs tolerate common-mode excursions up to ±20 V, and they accept differential sine and cosine amplitudes of 3.4 Veff. The front end presents an impedance of 10.4 kΩ – j11.1 kΩ, so loading on the passive resolver coil remains negligible. Phase skew between channels is limited to ±45°, and the transformation ratio is 0.5 with a margin of ±10%, which helps keep the reconstructed angle within controller tolerance even when cabling adds reactance.
Shaft speed information is regenerated at 10 kHz and made available as a digital stream, while an excitation drive of 50 mAeff keeps the resolver energized. Overall consumption stays below 2.5 W, allowing dense mounting without external cooling, and reliable function is supported up to an ambient temperature of 55 °C. The sensor leads can run up to 100 m through standard shielded cable terminated on a 9-pin female D-Sub connector. Because the resolver has no galvanic isolation, the module manages reference grounding internally and sends the measured values directly to the Powerlink master.
