The 80SD100XD.W044-01 stepper motor module is manufactured by B&R Automation as part of the 80SD Stepper Motor Modules series. It drives and monitors up to two stepper motors, translating network commands into phased current for position control in packaging machines, pick-and-place units, and light machining centers. By combining power electronics, encoder evaluation, and fieldbus communication in one compact module, the unit reduces panel space and supports coordinated motion over the vendor’s X2X real-time bus.
The internal DC link stores energy in a capacitor bank rated at 940 µF, helping stabilize voltage when the module delivers high phase currents during acceleration and deceleration. Current chopping occurs at a switching frequency of 38.5 kHz, which lowers audible noise and improves low-speed torque smoothness. Step generation is adjustable to 256 microsteps per full step, allowing finer position resolution and smoother travel through resonance-prone speed ranges. The power stage can supply up to 30 A peak across both motor connections, and control data are refreshed on the X2X bus every 250 µs for closely timed axis updates. Two differential encoder channels are accepted at rates up to 50 kHz, and each channel is decoded by a 16-bit counter and can be looped through as a 24 V ABR single-ended signal for downstream devices. Additional machine signals enter through two 24 V digital inputs.
The application layer can limit each motor to a nominal phase current of 10 A peak while still permitting short bursts of 15 A peak for two seconds when higher torque is required. Encoder feedback may be routed up to 25 m without repeaters, which helps when motors and cabinets are separated across larger machine frames. The IP20 housing is intended for installation in ventilated control cabinets. Two dedicated screw terminals provide isolated power feeds for the paired motors, keeping their supply wiring separated inside the control panel.
