The 80SD100XD.C033-01 is a stepper motor drive module from B & R Automation in the 80SD Stepper Motor Modules series. It energizes two bipolar motors and reads absolute position through SSI encoders, forming a compact axis controller for pick-and-place gantries, indexing tables, and small conveyors. By concentrating power electronics and fieldbus interfaces on one card, the unit reduces panel wiring and supplies deterministic motion commands over the X2X real-time bus used throughout the company’s machine-control platform.
During sustained motion, the module provides 10 A of phase current, a continuous limit chosen so transistor temperatures stay within design margins. For short transients, the common DC stage supports 30 A peak per module, letting multiple axes accelerate simultaneously. A bulk capacitor with a capacity of 940 µF smooths the 24–95 V input and stores energy returned during deceleration. Current is modulated at 38.5 kHz, a frequency that minimizes audible humming and improves control-loop resolution. Step generation reaches 256 microsteps per full step, allowing a standard 1.8-degree motor to move in increments smaller than one centidegree for quieter, low-ripple positioning.
Each motor winding can draw 15 A peak for 2 s, giving a single axis extra startup torque without exceeding thermal limits. An overvoltage trip activates at more than 95 V DC, while an undervoltage cutoff below 18 V protects the electronics against supply anomalies. The circuitry is housed in an IP20 enclosure, so it must be mounted inside a protective control cabinet. Communication latency is curtailed by a minimum X2X cycle time of 250 µs, enabling high-speed electronic gearing. Two SSI encoder channels accept 32-bit data at rates up to 1 Mbit/s, and dual motor terminals simplify daisy-chained wiring.
