As a compact control platform, it coordinates motion, logic, and visualization tasks on the plant floor and connects field devices to higher-level networks through built-in serial, fieldbus, and video resources. The unit integrates standard PC technology with hardened components so it can run real-time operating systems in machine panels or cabinet racks.

Core hardware supports deterministic execution. The board is initialized by the AWARD EliteBIOS, and instruction throughput is improved by a 512 KB PB-Cache that reduces external memory access. Communication with distributed I/O is possible through an electrically isolated CAN interface, which also accepts non-maskable interrupts for time-critical events.
