The 5LS251.60-1 logic scanner card is manufactured by B&R Automation within the 5LS Logic Scanner Cards series. Installed in the controller’s PCI backplane, the board supervises cyclic data exchange between the central processor and fieldbus segments. Its task is to collect input status, update output images, and maintain deterministic timing so that motion axes, safety chains, and general-purpose I/O remain synchronized across an industrial machine. By offloading these real-time duties, the card frees the host CPU for higher-level sequencing and visualization tasks.
The interface links to the motherboard through a 33 MHz PCI bus that moves data on a 32-bit path. A 32-bit RISC core executes each internal command in 0.13 microseconds, delivering short and predictable scan intervals. Program variables reside in 2 MByte DRAM, while code lines are prefetched by a 2 × 256-byte cache to minimize wait states. Power drawn from the backplane stays below 7.75 W, which helps when multiple option cards share the same supply rails. Additional fast-access memory consists of 174 KByte SRAM for system tasks and 850 KByte SRAM for user data, both backed by a 512 KByte FlashPROM section used as system PROM and another 512 KByte block reserved for user firmware.
Field connectivity is provided by a CAN master that addresses 64 logical stations and by a remote I/O bus that can accommodate 31 slaves with a transfer time of 897 microseconds per cycle. The scanner’s deterministic layer timestamps events to a real-time resolution of 1 second, which supports predictable synchronism for slow supervisory tasks such as batching or energy logging. To guard against data loss, parameter sets are retained by a 3 V / 950 mAh lithium backup battery. Configuration code is stored in separate flash memory, and the cache helps reduce instruction delays during repeated processing.
