The 5LS197.6 logic scanner card is produced by B&R Automation and belongs to the 5LS Logic Scanner Cards series. It functions as an intermediary between a system computer and remote field devices in industrial automation, converting local bus cycles into deterministic X2X transfers. Mounted inside a control PC, the card provides high-speed logic scanning, supports status relays, and simplifies wiring when a machine requires an extensive network of connected nodes. Its design allows the host computer to exchange process information with distributed equipment through a dedicated industrial communication interface.
The onboard CAN interface is managed by an SJA 1000 controller, giving the card hardware arbitration and error confinement for fieldbus traffic. The network supports cable runs of up to 1000 m over shielded twisted-pair wiring and a maximum throughput of 500 kbit/s, allowing communication parameters to be matched to the plant layout. The electronics use a half-size PCI form factor, so the module fits compatible computer slots without additional mounting brackets. During operation, the card draws only 2.28 W, reducing the heat load inside the host enclosure and allowing convection cooling rather than forced air. The card does not include an internal bus supply, so network power must be provided by an external source.

The distance between repeaters can reach 100 m, and internally switched termination resistors simplify network setup. A dedicated SRAM buffer with a capacity of 1 MB stores cyclic process data, helping maintain consistent scans during host CPU interrupts. The ready relay built into the front bracket is rated at 10 A and 30 VDC, providing a hardware status signal for connected control circuits. The card has an IP20 enclosure rating, making it suitable for installation inside closed control cabinets rather than in locations exposed to dust, water, or accidental contact.
