Product Description:

The 5LS189.6-1 logic scanner card is produced by B&R Automation for the 5LS Logic Scanner Cards series. Installed within a modular controller, it serves as the master that polls distributed I/O, times deterministic data exchange, and signals network readiness to the main CPU. This role lets the processor coordinate remote modules without relying on unscheduled traffic, which helps keep machine responses consistent during cyclic operation. The module links field devices to higher-level automation systems and helps synchronize machine sequences.

Interface 1 operates as an X2X Link Master and uses a 4-pin male multipoint connector for the fieldbus connection. It can reach remote stations up to 100 m away and is galvanically isolated from Interface 2 to avoid ground loops between network sections. Interface 2 carries POWERLINK (V1/V2) traffic through a shielded RJ45 connector, and both channels transfer cyclic frames at 100 Mbit/s to support synchronized motion and high-speed sensor sampling. The communication stack follows POWERLINK Type 3, so mixed V1 and V2 nodes can coexist on the same network without changing the installed card.

The card draws only 4 W, so it imposes little load on the control cabinet supply during continuous operation. The module uses 1 MB of battery-backed SRAM for user data, parameter sets, and scan tables, which keeps stored information available after power is removed. A ready relay built onto the PCB can switch 10 A at 30 VDC, enabling a hardwired status output for external monitoring circuits. The Ethernet transceivers use the 100BASE-T physical layer for copper links, and environmental protection corresponds to IP20, so the board must be mounted in an enclosed rack. Additional isolation exists between the PC interface and both field buses to prevent unintended current paths.
