The 5LS189.6 logic scanner card is produced by B & R Automation within the 5LS Logic Scanner Cards series. Installed in a controller PC, the board acts as a communication interface that scans remote I/O over Ethernet POWERLINK as well as over the X2X Link network. By integrating these two deterministic buses on one plug-in card, machine builders can synchronize drives, sensors, and safety modules from a single PCI slot.
The card occupies a standard PCI half-size module slot, drawing only 4.0 W from the backplane, so the heat load on the host system stays minimal. For Ethernet cabling, it follows the 100BASE-T physical layer and accepts segments up to 100 m in length, attached through a shielded RJ45 port that maintains signal integrity in noisy cabinets. The circuit has an IP20 protection rating, making it suitable for closed control enclosures. Plug-and-play enumeration lets the operating system detect the board without manual resource setup. Separate galvanic barriers provide IF1-to-IF2 isolation and PC-to-interface isolation, preventing ground loops between network segments and the motherboard. These safeguards support continuous operation in high-speed packaging and assembly cells.
On the real-time side, the integrated controller sustains a data throughput of 100 Mbit/s while acting as a master for the X2X Link that leaves the board through a 4-pin male multipoint connector. Local buffering is handled by 1 MB of on-board SRAM, which queues cyclic process images so the CPU can respond deterministically even under interrupt load. A ready relay is provided for safety circuits and can switch up to 10 A at 30 VDC, allowing the application to disconnect power stages when the network is not in the operational state. Remote updates and node scans can be executed without jumper changes or additional cabling.
