Product Description:
The 5LS189 logic scanner card is manufactured by B&R Automation for the 5LS Logic Scanner Cards series. Designed for PC-based control, the board synchronizes distributed I/O over X2X Link and POWERLINK so that motion, safety, and visualization nodes share a unified scan cycle. By mounting directly in a controller backplane, it integrates network management with minimal latency and provides a compact way to supervise deterministic fieldbus traffic in industrial automation environments. This arrangement lets the host controller exchange process data and timing information through one installed card rather than separate communication modules.
The board conforms to a standard PCI half-size footprint, so it fits compact industrial PCs without exceeding a single-slot width. Communication data are buffered in 1 MB SRAM that remains valid during power loss because of the onboard battery. Typical draw is 4 W, which helps limit internal heat and reduces demand on backplane power. Rated operation spans 0 to 55 °C ambient and up to 95% humidity. Interface 1 uses a 4-pin male multipoint plug and acts as an X2X Link master, while Interface 2 terminates on a shielded RJ45 jack with a physical layer compliant with 100BASE-T for copper cabling.
Over POWERLINK, the second interface can be configured either as a managing node or a controlled node. That flexibility lets the card serve as either a network coordinator or a subordinate device within the same POWERLINK infrastructure. The twisted-pair channel sustains a full-duplex rate of 100 Mbit/s over segments up to 100 m, allowing the controller to reach remote drives without media converters. A 3 V lithium button cell rated at 3 V / 950 mAh preserves the SRAM image and real-time clock during extended shutdowns. The card has a protection category of IP20, so it must remain behind a grounded cover to avoid accidental contact. Storage is permitted from −25 to 70 °C, which helps protect the backup cell and other onboard components while the card is out of service.
