The 5LS187 logic scanner card is manufactured by B&R Automation and belongs to the 5LS Logic Scanner Cards series. It occupies a PCI slot inside a machine controller and translates field-level traffic to the host CPU, allowing discrete devices, drives, and safety modules to share data across an Ethernet Powerlink backbone. In an industrial automation rack, the card serves as a communication bridge so that cycle-critical I/O can be synchronized with the PLC task.
The card uses a half-size PCI form factor, permitting installation in compact or low-profile enclosures. Its energy demand is limited to 4.0 W, reducing the heat load inside densely populated cabinets. Powerlink frames are transmitted at 100 Mbit/s over a shielded RJ45 connector that uses the 100BASE-T physical layer, so segment length can follow standard Cat-5e cabling rules. The housing carries an IP20 protection rating, so the board must be mounted in a closed control cabinet. For real-time buffering of network variables, the module is equipped with 1 MB of SRAM. Additional features include separate galvanic isolation between IF1 and IF2 as well as between the PC bus and each interface; this prevents ground loops when subsystems operate at different potentials. The Plug and Play attribute lets the operating system recognize the card without manual resource allocation.
On the field side, the card provides 1 CAN bus interface that terminates on a 4-pin male multipoint connector. The Powerlink port can span up to 100 m of twisted-pair cable before a repeater is required, enabling remote panel placement. A ready relay delivers both normally open and normally closed contacts so downstream circuits can monitor card status, and it handles up to 30 VDC. Isolation between the PC bus and external interfaces remains active whenever field power is present, maintaining signal integrity during machine operation.
